For my first Tuneage contribution, here’s Chiddy Bang: a few young guys from Drexel (mostly lyricist Aaron/Chiddy and producer Xaphoon Jones) who’re trying to break out of Philly, who aren’t waiting around for their turn to come. Their journey of doing so — and the results they get — are chronicled in what might be one of the most epic pre-label releases ever, The Swelly Express, which you can download for free at Pretty Much Amazing. If you like Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, Atmosphere, or Girl Talk, you’ll probably be pretty happy with Chiddy Bang.

The record’s got some pretty stellar skits, guest appearances by Philly’s rap royalty (Black Thought of The Roots), and samples from artists you might recognize: Sufjan Stevens, Passion Pit, and MGMT, for example, whose “Kids” you’ll hear chopped up in this song, which is becoming a hit in the UK. Even if you’re not crazy about MGMT (like me), they’ve taken the original track and given it some serious tweaking, turning the tempo on its head, and making a pretty legit, stellar beat out of it. The video for the song just debuted today, too. These guys are gonna go far; if anything, you’ll appreciate their hustle. — fek
